When cleaning your home, kitchen countertops and bathroom sinks can be your main focus, which can lead to other surfaces being overlooked.

Research from retailer ScS has shown that carpets and other floor coverings can be neglected during a cleaning.

It gave some top tips to keep your carpets in top shape.

Bedroom carpets top the list of the dirtiest places in the home, according to findings from retailer ScS

The retailer did a swab of different areas of the house and found varying levels of aerobic batteries, yeast and mold particles.

It turned out that carpets in the bedroom and in the living room topped the list of the dirtiest places.

This compared to other spaces such as a gym floor, office carpet and even a toilet seat.

Experts recommend vacuuming weekly to prevent dirt from accumulating in your carpets

Experts recommend vacuuming weekly to prevent dirt from accumulating in your carpets.

For best results, they recommend using a vacuum cleaner with soft bristles and strong suction.

Jack Ogden, from ScS, said: ‘Vacuuming is a fantastic way to stop the build-up of dirt and dust which can cause dulling or damage to the carpet over a long period of time.

“It’s best to vacuum your carpet at least once a week with soft bristles and strong suction to prolong the life of the fibers.”

How much dirt?

The retailer ScS did a swab of different areas of the house and found varying levels of aerobic batteries, yeast and mold particles.

The following test items are in order of infection (Colony Forming Units per cm2), where a score of zero means no bacteria:

1. Bedroom Carpet (140)

2. Living room carpet (52)

3. Gym Floor (14.5)

4. Toilet seat (12.4)

5. Office Carpet (2.9)

He continued: ‘For stains that are sticky, like wet mud, it’s best to use specialty carpet cleaning products to make sure you don’t put anything too strong on the surface and potentially do more damage.

For liquid-based stains, use a clean cloth to soak up as much of the spill as possible. Do not scrub the stain, as this will damage the fibers and push the stain further down. Instead, blot the stain until most of it is gone.

“If you’re using a specific cleaning product, remember to spray the product onto your cloth, not directly onto the carpet. Spraying the carpet deepens the stain and encourages its spread.”

To give carpets a complete refresh, Ogden recommends a deeper cleaning every year.

He said: ‘If you want to keep your wool carpet in top condition and remove all the dirt trapped in the fibres, it is recommended that you steam your carpet every 12 to 18 months.

‘This can extend the life of your carpet and keep it soft and clean to the touch. If you steam your carpet more often, you can damage the natural wool fibers.’
