Why this viral video of Kamala Harris exercising on steps of Lincoln Memorial spooked VP into dramatic change in her routine
Kamala Harris stopped exercising outdoors over fears that a 2021 video of her walking the steps of the Lincoln Memorial highlighted her age difference with Joe Biden.
A new profile of Harris shows the Democratic nominee was unusually deferential to Biden in the early years of his presidency, unlike the woman who easily won the 2024 nomination after her boss dropped out.
Harris, 59, has received widespread positive feedback for the video, which saw her running up and down the steps of the monument with her husband, Doug Emhoff. Some onlookers even compared the masked exercise to the famous montage in Rocky.
One fitness website said she had done ‘a cardio workout’ with others who praise her for ‘working for the American people’ and exercising at the same time.
But Harris didn’t buy the flattery, the Wall Street Journal reported. Sources told the paper that she went inside to work out afterward, fearing it would make her 81-year-old boss look bad.

The story comes from a narrative that suggests the Biden administration hasn’t suppressed Harris, but hasn’t exactly lifted her up either.
Helpers told the Wall Street Journal that it never occurred to them that Biden would not run for a second term.
It was also suggested that Harris did not expect her role as the so-called “Border Czar,” a title both the president and vice president deny giving her.
According to a person close to Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband called the role a punishment.
Others close to Harris say she finally found her groove after the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The Supreme Court ruling allowed Harris to play a prominent role as the administration fought the ruling.
Harris was catapulted into the race after Biden announced last month that he was abandoning his re-election campaign.
Although she underperformed as vice president, Harris had a strong start to her campaign and is now seen as a worthy opponent to Trump.
Aides said Harris’ reluctance to make Biden — now 81 and the oldest president in U.S. history — look his age led the vice president to switch to indoor workouts from then on.
