Why this photo at the entrance of an Aussie beach sums up a trait almost everyone has Down Under: ‘The most relatable snap of the year’
A simple photo from an Aussie beach has sparked a debate about how 'trusting' people Down Under are.
The image shows the entrance to a beach near the small coastal town of Carrickalinga in South Australia, surrounded by dozens of pairs of unattended shoes.
Beachgoers left their shoes at the entrance as they walked on the sand, seemingly without fear that someone would steal them.
“We really are a trusting couple here in Australia,” one woman wrote on Reddit after with the photo sparking a series of hilarious reactions.
“Now everyone, remember where you parked your thongs!” one man joked and a second said: “One of the unwritten rules of the beach.”
'You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a television. You wouldn't steal a juicy Chinese meal. You wouldn't steal a double plugga!' laughed a third.
'I leave my keys and phone on the beach while I go swimming. Nothing has ever been stolen, but I'm sure it's happened to someone,” said a fourth.
'I always think that when I go to the cricket and people use their bags to mark their seats. It's phenomenal how good we are for each other,” one person added.
However, others pointed out that stealing 'sweaty thongs' may not be an attractive prospect for opportunistic thieves.
“If anyone wants to steal my sweaty pluggers, go for it!” one user joked.
“If they're that desperate, they probably need them more than I do,” another replied.
A third commented: 'No, we just avoid athlete's foot and other infectious diseases.'
Some pointed out that the sand on many Australian beaches would be too hot to leave their shoes behind and walk barefoot.
“It's clearly not Perth… you definitely don't go barefoot on the sand there in the summer.” said a woman.
“Who walks barefoot on burning hot sand?” asked another.
