Why Sydneysiders are being warned to stay off the roads this weekend

Sydneysiders have been urged to ditch their cars this weekend as a series of major events threaten to cause traffic gridlock in the city.

Locals and tourists alike are treated to several back-to-back events scheduled across Sydney. It all starts when Paul McCartney takes the stage at Moore Park on Friday at 7.30pm.

The former Beatles frontman will also perform at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, with 70,000 people expected to attend the event over the two nights.

About 50,000 people are also expected to attend Oktoberfest, with the big beer festival being held at The Domain in the CBD on Saturday.

More than 10,000 punters will head to the east of Harbor City to watch the races at Royal Randwick Racecourse as the Sydney Everest Carnival continues at the track.

Meanwhile, in Bondi, thousands of people are expected to attend Sculpture by the Sea along the coastal path.

Those heading into the city for the events are urged to leave the car at home and take public transport instead.

Ticket holders for the Paul McCartney concert can travel for free on numerous light rail services that run throughout the city throughout the night.

For those going to the races, their travel will also be covered by their tickets and additional trains and buses will also run through the Town Hall, St James and Martin Place.

Transport for NSW said those planning to drive into the city this weekend should allow plenty of extra travel time.

‘If you must drive, arrive early to secure parking as parking is limited and fills up quickly. Allow plenty of extra travel time and carpool with your group, because there is a lot of traffic, especially on Friday evenings during the busy evening rush hour,” they say.

‘Concert tickets include travel on public transport, simply show your ticket to the staff when boarding.’

Parking in the Moore Park lot is expected to be limited as the light rail is expected to be busy as race and concert goers are expected to converge on the city around the same time.

‘Light rail services will be busy and traffic will be heavy after the races as visitors leave Royal Randwick at the same time as concertgoers arrive at Allianz Stadium for the Paul McCartney concert. Please be patient and allow for additional travel time,” Transport for NSW said.

The transport authority warned that visitors to Sculpture by the Sea could expect major delays on the roads.

‘Significant traffic delays are expected on the roads approaching Bondi and Tamarama during the event, especially at weekends, so please allow plenty of extra travel time if you need to drive.’

‘Due to the large crowds and very limited parking in the area, public transport is the best way to get to and from the event.’
