Why India have a massive advantage in their T20 World Cup semi-final with England as Jos Buttler’s side eye second consecutive title

  • England will take on India in the second semi-final in Guyana
  • There is a serious threat of rain in the area ahead of their clash
  • There is no reserve day planned in case the match day is cancelled

England may not have started their T20 World Cup campaign with a bang as they found themselves staring down the barrel of elimination in the first group stage.

Their opening match of the tournament was rained out before they suffered a heavy defeat to Australia.

But they managed to right the ship and cruised through the group stages with wins over Oman and Namibia as they progressed to the Super 8s.

Their performance in the second phase of the tournament was much more positive as they recorded convincing wins over the West Indies and the United States, or a narrow defeat to South Africa to finish second.

Their opponents, India, have had a much easier time and are unbeaten on their way to beating their Super 8s group.

England’s opening match against Scotland was canceled due to rain and their semi-final against India is also threatened by the weather

That has given them an extra important advantage for their semi-final against England later today.

After England had already been wiped out once, the game is in danger of becoming unplayable again due to the weather.

What is the weather forecast for Georgetown, Guyana?

According to the With office there is a significant chance of rain showers in the area around the time the match starts at 10:30 am local time.

However, it is worth noting that none of the five matches Guyana has hosted in this tournament have been cancelled, although the last one was more than two weeks ago.

However, the overall forecast is much better than initially feared as the suggestion of thunderstorms appears to have given way to showers, becoming cloudy in the afternoon.

What are the rules when it rains?

The first thing to note is that, unlike yesterday’s semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan, there is no reserve day for the England-India match.

An additional 250 minutes will be available to finish the match if weather influences, but that will be on the same day.

If the match cannot be completed due to bad weather, India will advance to the final of the T20 World Cup to face the Proteas.

India’s advantage comes as they finished first in their Super 8s group and England finished second.

Section 13.6.2.1 of the ICC playing conditions for the tournament states: ‘The Final on 29 June has a reserve day on 30 June. Extra time will be added to the semi-finals to complete the match, which will last a total of 250 minutes.

‘For the first semi-final on June 26, 60 minutes will be available at the end of the matchday and the remaining 190 minutes are scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 27.

‘While the additional 250 minutes for the second semi-final, scheduled for June 27, will be used if necessary by extending the playing times on the scheduled day.’

Why is England playing in the second semi-final?

India have been locked in to host Guyana in the semi-finals since the World Cup schedule was drawn up – an arrangement no other team in the competition could make.

The match in Trinidad starts at 8:30 PM local time, which is an ungodly 6:00 AM in India. The Guyana game, on the other hand, starts at 10am in South America – perfect for the Indian evening crowd.

When England dropped to second place in Group 2 of the Super 8s, it ensured they would also be in semi-final two, with India topping Group 1.
