Why footy star Mitchell Pearce credits a ghost whisperer for saving his career when he suffered a huge setback
Mitchell Pearce enjoyed rugby league’s highest highs but also had its lowest lows during a rollercoaster career that he believes might never have taken off without some supernatural intervention.
Pearce started his rugby league career with the Sydney Roosters in 2007 when he was just a teenager and quickly rose to the top of the playmaking rankings, picked to represent NSW in the 2008 State of Origin series.
He retired in 2023 following the Catalans’ 2023 Super League grand final defeat to Wigan and has since returned to Australia to seek new opportunities after a stellar career that included 350 first-class appearances.
However, Pearce – the son of NSW and Australian rugby league legend Wayne Pearce – has revealed his family feared his career would never have caught fire unless they had called in a ghost whisperer during his first season.
“I had an injury that was bothering me a lot,” Mitchell said New Corp.
“It was a nagging pain in my shoulder, and I just couldn’t get over it. I was playing with pain, and nothing I did to treat it helped. And one day the pain suddenly stopped.”
Although it felt like a miracle to Pearce, his family had performed an intervention without his knowledge to free him from his pain – which they believed was caused by a troubled boy who had recently died but could not reach the next life.
When he happily told his parents, Wayne and Terri, that his pain was gone, they were not shocked. Instead, they revealed that they had called in a ghost whisperer to clean the family home.

The former Roosters and Knights star battled a mystery injury in his first year of first grade, but the pain disappeared after the cleanse took place
“I told him the medium had cleared the house and the boy was gone now,” Terri said.
‘He didn’t climb over his back anymore. And the crazy thing is that the spirit crossed over at the same time that Mitch’s injury inexplicably disappeared.”
A stunned Pearce then shared that story with his Roosters teammates.
“They must have thought I was out of my mind,” he said.
Pearce was all smiles in 2007, but behind the grin he was battling a personal pain he couldn’t shake until the ghost whisperer intervened
Mitchell Pearce’s sister Tatum (right) also felt the boy’s presence in her room
It all started when Mitchell’s youngest sister Tatum felt a presence in her room, which was right next to the NRL star’s own bedroom.
Her parents jumped out of bed and immediately thought someone was in their house, but Tatum quickly clarified, “No, not anyone. Something. It’s a ghost.’
The Pearce family then claimed to have noticed all kinds of tricks and traps of the mind, including bumps in the night and times when the entity would even trip them up.
“I often stumbled or stumbled over a step,” Wayne said.
‘I had to avoid falling over by grabbing the wall or another step. I would get up and keep going. It was just something that I thought was weird.”
Even Tatum’s friend was seen running out of the room in fright, claiming to have seen the apparition of a boy.
Pearce would go on to have a successful football career, including claiming the 2013 premiership with the Roosters (pictured)
“He seems to have a large presence in your boy’s room,” the ghost whisperer told Wayne and Terri.
‘That’s where he spends most of his time. He also hangs out in the hallway and goes to the girls’ room next door.
“Do not be afraid as this is not unusual, but I believe the spirit has attached itself to the boy,” the medium told the couple.
‘He hangs on his back all the time. He always lies on his back and jumps around. He is not an evil spirit. I would describe him as playful, and he is clearly attracted to the boy because he considers him a friend and likes his company.
“But the good news is that he has crossed over now,” she told them.
“He’s gone and he won’t come back.”
The Roosters halfback would go on to play 19 games for the Blues and claim the 2013 NRL premiership.
In 2022, Pearce moved to the Super League, signing for the Catalans Dragons. Pearce has retired from professional rugby league and is focusing on opportunities in coaching, media and other ventures related to the sport.
