Why did Jimmy Uso turn on Jey Uso in the SummerSlam main event? An old interview seems to reveal WWE’s grand plans for the superstar twins

  • Jimmy and Jey Uso have long been one of WWE’s most popular tag teams
  • The duo had remained aligned since their debut in 2010
  • But Jimmy turned on Jey to cost him a win over their cousin Roman Reigns

WWE fans were shocked when Saturday’s SummerSlam saw one of the most popular tag teams in recent memory come to a dramatic end.

With the Bloodline stable already embroiled in a civil war for several months, Jey Uso looked poised to finally reach the pinnacle of the WWE when he took on Roman Reigns in Tribal Combat in the main event of SummerSlam.

Just weeks after inflicting Reigns’ first pinfall loss in nearly three years, Jey looked poised to finally end his cousin’s all-conquering run with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Landing the Uso splash on a motionless Reigns, Jey came within milliseconds of capturing the gold before being dragged out of the ring mid pinfall by a masked figure, later revealed to be his brother and old partner Jimmy Uso.

The interference ultimately cost Jey the match, and in the aftermath of the event, fans took to social media to wonder why the brothers had broken up for the first time in their more than a decade-long WWE run.

But Jimmy Uso stepped in, splitting their pair up for the first time in their WWE run and setting up a potential confrontation between the pair

However, it seems that the idea for the twins to eventually become rivals actually came from the Usos themselves.

In a interview with Ariel Helwani for TNT Sports last month, Jey explained that their desire to eventually meet on the biggest stage of them all has been around since childhood.

The 37-year-old also explained that the twins planned for their father, WWE legend Rikishi, to serve as a special guest referee for the clash.

“It’s like the living room, Uce. This is what we always wanted to do from day one,” Jey said.

“I want my dad to be there and involved, (as a) referee, I just want my whole family to run this thing.

“Just because I’m against my brother, my heart will be filled with joy, man.”

An all-Uso showdown wouldn’t be the first time WrestleMania staged a clash between actual brothers.

At WrestleMania X in 1994, Bret Hart took on brother Owen, with the latter raising his hand in a match regularly touted as one of the greatest in the event’s history.

However, the Hitman would enjoy the last laugh and would return later in the night to defeat Yokozuna to capture the world title for a second time.
