Why David Warner and wife Candice were nowhere to be seen at Australian cricket’s night of nights

  • Batsman, 37, is in the UAE for the T20 tournament with Dubai Capitals
  • Warner will soon fly home for the T20 series versus West Indies

They are the power couple of Australian cricket, but David Warner and his wife Candice were not present at the Allan Border Medal on Wednesday evening.

Instead, they swapped Melbourne for Dubai, where the 37-year-old is playing a global T20 tournament.

Warner took the opportunity to take his family abroad on his latest sporting adventure, posted many photos on his Instagram from the United Arab Emirates in recent weeks.

And having recently retired from the Test and ODI arena for Australia, Warner’s influence was on full display at Crown Casino in the form of a highlights package.

It showcased his impressive international career, which started in a T20 match against South Africa at the MCG in January 2009.

And while Warner was a conspicuous absentee in Melbourne, at least he didn’t complain about the gala event this time.

The star batsman raised many eyebrows after it emerged that he had asked Cricket Australia officials whether participation in the 2023 Allan Border Medal was mandatory.

Warner’s preference at the time was to spend time at home with his three girls and wife.

He still came to the Sydney event last year, but he wasn’t happy about it.

Not long after arriving at Royal Randwick with wife Candice, Warner declared: “Tonight is all about the partners… it’s their chance to dress up and look absolutely fantastic.”

The opening batsman will soon fly home from the Middle East ahead of the T20 series against the West Indies, which starts in Tasmania on February 9.

Warner has also raised his hand to participate in the T20 World Cup, which the US and West Indies will co-host later this year.

Australia will play England, Namibia, Scotland and Oman in the group stage from June 6.
