Why cigarette-smoking golf star Charley Hull wants Donald Trump’s Turnberry to host The Open and women’s events: ‘It’s a shame’

Charley Hull wants The Open to return to Donald Trump’s Turnberry and hopes the Scottish course can also host women’s events.

Trump Turnberry was removed from the R&A’s Open Venues list in 2021, following the riots at the US Capitol on 6 January.

Trump has also come under fire over the sky-high green fees at the iconic Ailsa links course, which has hosted four Open Championships.

Visitors must now pay £1,000 ($1,285) for 18 holes or £545 ($700) to play after 1pm.

But Hull, who recently went viral for her smoking habits, played the Ailsa Course this week and called it “one of the best in the world.”

The world number 11 said Trump Turnberry, which was bought by the former US president in 2014, should host a major golf championship again.

“One hundred percent,” Hull said. “It’s a shame, it’s a really great course. I love being on the course, and the views on that course are amazing. It was so much fun.”

The English golfer was speaking ahead of the Women’s Open, which takes place in St Andrews later this month. Hull wants Turnberry to also host women’s tournaments.

Hull missed out on a medal at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, finishing tied for 27th

“Honestly, it’s one of the best golf courses in the world. It would be a shame not to be there.”

Hull finished tied for 27th at last week’s Paris Olympics, but the 28-year-old will be hoping to follow up her second-place finish from last year at the Women’s Open.

“I think the US Open and the British Open are the two most important events for me,” she said.

“(It’s) obviously on home soil and it’s something we always dream about. That and the US Open are the tournaments you always dream about winning as a little girl.”
