Why Ange Postecoglou is ‘better qualified’ for Premier League than Steven Gerrard & Brendan Rodgers

Football pundit says Ange Postecoglou is better qualified to make it as Premier League manager than Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers

  • angry Postecoglou continues to impress at Celtic
  • Rumors of a transfer to the Premier League continue
  • Hoops on course for the treble of the season ahead of the FA Cup final

Respected football author Hamish Carton has stated that Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou would be a better option as a Premier League manager than Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Postecoglou, 57, is on the brink of a treble this season, having already won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup.

A likely victory against second-tier Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final on June 4 would secure a third piece of silverware – and ‘Aussie Ange”s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed by Premier League clubs.

Postecoglou also won the Premiership and the Scottish League Cup in his first season as leader of the Hoops.

Carton, the writer behind Never Stop: How Ange Postecoglou brought the fire back to Celticis confident the former Socceroos boss would hold his own if Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Wolves or Everton reach out.

Rogers was also a fan favorite when he was at Celtic between 2016 and 2019, but Carton is adamant the competition was weaker then than it is now

Liverpool great Steven Gerrard cut his managerial teeth at Rangers in Scotland and won a title in 2021 – but after securing a move to Aston Villa he was sacked within 12 months

He was also adamant Postecoglou is a smarter option compared to Gerrard, who won a title in charge of Celtic’s bitter rivals Rangers in 2021, and Rodgers, who won trophies prolifically when he was in charge of Celtic Park from 2016 to 2019 .

Both Gerrard (Aston Villa) and Rodgers (Leicester City) secured a move to the Premier League after success in Scotland – but their time in the top flight was limited.

Gerrard was sacked from Villa Park within 12 months and the Foxes became relegation contenders under Rodgers, who was sacked by the club in early April.

“I would say Ange is probably a better manager than those two,” said Carton.

“He might do even more amazing things than those two.

“I know Rodgers won back-to-back trebles, but the [Scottish] competition is now much better.’

Former Socceroo Robbie Slater believes the appeal of another UEFA Champions League tilt next season will see Postecoglou stay put.

“I think that will be the reason he stays,” he said.

“Ange has experienced that level of football with this group of players… which might help them do even better next season.

“If he goes to the Premier League, he’ll have to get off to a flying start… you don’t get time to settle in.

“If the results don’t follow, he’ll be sacked… and he’s the king at Celtic, a big club… and they love him.”
