Why a single photo of Anthony Albanese eating a pork sandwich in Sydney’s inner-west trendy Marrickville has angered Australians
Anthony Albanese has sparked anger after sharing a photo of his lunch.
The prime minister visited the Marrickville Pork Roll shop in his trendy western Sydney electorate over lunch on Wednesday, where he owns a home, and shared two images from the excursion.
One shows the bespectacled Prime Minister, wearing a form-fitting ‘Yes’ campaign T-shirt, peering up at the menu card at the back of the queue as it saunters out of the shop onto the street, while the other shows a close-up of his lunch.
“Nothing beats the original Marrickville Pork Roll,” Mr. Albanese captioned the post.

But his comments were inundated by Australians angry that the man who was supposed to run the country was able to take time out of his busy schedule to spend between $5 and 10 on lunch.
“I wish I could afford to eat out, rents are getting insane and you choose to help landlords like you and your co-workers, and developers above us!” one woman indignant wrote.
Another asked, “What about the people in this country who can’t afford a pork sandwich, a roof over their heads, or electricity?”
Others accused Mr Albanese of flaunting his disposable income at a time when all Australians have to tighten their belts.
“You know what would make it even better? Tackling the cost of living crisis and the housing crisis!
“Thoughts go out to those who struggle to put food on the table, those who can’t afford the table, and those who can’t afford the house to put the table in,” added another.
‘Glad you can afford to buy a takeaway, not like the rest of us fighting to make ends meet, higher rents, higher electricity, higher fuel, homeless… the list goes on and all Australians getting poorer under your government… wake up and start focusing on this country,” someone else said.
One person joked that Mr Albanese was ‘pretending to be one of the people’.
“Did you notice how few ‘people’ there were? Only RICH politicians can afford takeout these days,” they noted.
But not everyone was equally critical.
‘I love these pictures. He’s in line. No ceremony here. I love Albo!” one fan wrote.
Other politicians also joined in.
I’m sure it’s a good Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, but does it beat a Wallsend Bakery Bahn Mi??’, wrote Sonia Hornery MP, who represents Wallsend in the NSW Parliament.
Last year Mr Albanese was caught aggressively eating a sausage sandwich while campaigning in Perth
Meanwhile, Hunter federal member Dan Rapacholi quipped, “Almost as good as Branxton Bakery’s.”
At least the Prime Minister was wise not to share a photo of him actually eating the pork sandwich.
In 2016, then-Opposition leader Bill Shorten shocked many when he bit into a sausage sandwich from the side.
Mr Albanese didn’t quite repeat the same mistake last year when he was caught on camera handling a sausage sandwich.
