Veteran Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon has revealed that an advert for Channel Seven’s cricket coverage led to a very awkward conversation between him and his wife Emma after they were shocked by the footage.
The commercial, which aired during this year’s AFL grand final, suggested this summer’s Test series against Pakistan will be the last time Australian fans will see Lyon and his teammates David Warner, Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja in action to see.
Lyon, who plans to continue his career until 2027, was stunned.
“I was very surprised,” Lyon told the newspaper Sydney Morning Herald.
‘Emma, my wife, said, “Do you have something to tell me?”, to which I said “no.” So I couldn’t believe it, but it’s just promo material. I definitely reset some goals and changed the finish line.

‘When I got home (from the Ashes) I had quite a bit of trouble watching the boys in the last three games, just mentally.
“Seeing them and seeing how the games went, and knowing that you could potentially play a big role in making a difference.
“But being at home and watching the AFL grand final and the NRL grand final, which allowed me to refresh and recuperate… made me hungrier than ever to get back.
“Watching those finals, seeing the cheer of the festivities and the sadness of the boys who had lost, it just lit a little flame and made it burn a lot brighter.”
Lyon told reporters on Monday exactly how difficult it was to end his Ashes campaign early.
“I was in a very dark place with the Ashes still on,” Lyon said.
‘Being at home for the last three games was very difficult for me.’
Lyon says his injured calf is now stronger than ever before, and so is his drive to play cricket.

“It probably increased my drive, to be honest. “I always said I wanted to win in India and England, but I couldn’t do that, so it looks like we have to go again,” Lyon said.
In the meantime, he is enjoying watching the Aussies compete in the ODI World Cup.
“I’m watching as an Australian fan and I think it’s great,” Lyon said.
“I feel like their team there, they have some very talented players. They have a world class selection. I hope they go to the extreme.”
And it was also entertaining to watch the England team struggle in the World Cup.
“I absolutely loved it,” he said.
