Whoopie Goldberg accused Nikki Haley of being too old to be part of a “new generation” of politicians, echoing CNN’s Don Lemon’s controversial comments that the Republican presidential candidate was “past her prime” as a woman.
During Monday’s episode of The View, Goldberg played a clip of Haley pushing for younger people to come to the fore when it comes to leadership roles.
‘The Washington establishment has failed us time and time and time again. It’s time for a new generation of leadership,” Haley said in a campaign ad.
But Goldberg, who is past US retirement age at 67, took umbrage at Haley’s position as part of the next generation of politicians.
‘You are not a new generation. You are 51 years old. What are you talking about? Goldberg asked to cheers and applause from the audience.

Nikki Haley calls for term limits in Congress and for those over 75 to take mental competency tests.
‘It’s not a new generation. He may be younger than most of those people, but his rhetoric is the same. She is saying the same nonsense. I love the young guy, but the only way to get younger people to run, man, is if you’re out there talking to people who say ‘run’. We are not going to vote for people who do not have our best interests at heart,” Goldberg continued.
I’m sick of people talking about age. If you can do the job, I don’t care about age. You can be as old as dirt if you do things for America. This is how I feel. If you put a lot of young people there, you will still have to sit at the feet of the older people because you don’t know as much. Think yes, and relax. Chill out. You think you’re going to live forever, you don’t.
‘It’s not my fault that young people don’t show up. I’m asking people to run. It’s up to the young people who are there to say, listen, come do what I’m trying to do. That is his job, and his job.
Goldberg’s comments were similar to those expressed by CNN anchor Don Lemon, when during a discussion on Thursday’s edition of CNN This Morning about the ages of politicians, he said Haley, 51, was not “at his best.”
Don Lemon said that a woman considered herself in her prime ‘in her 20s, 30s and maybe her 40s’.
Lemon’s co-hosts seem annoyed by his comments about the age of women.
Lemon argued that discussing the merits of age in politics was “the wrong way to go”.
“She says that people, you know, politicians are suddenly not at their best. Nikki Haley is not in her prime,” Lemon said.
A woman, she said, considered herself in her prime “in her 20s, 30s and maybe her 40s.”
Challenged by co-host Poppy Harlow, Lemon added: “Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just stating what the facts are.”
Harlow chimed in by asking, ‘What are you talking about? First for what?
“That doesn’t agree with me,” Lemon, who is five years older than Haley, insisted then.
‘It depends. It’s like, main. If you look for it. If you google “What is a woman in her prime?” she will say 20, 30, 40’, she said. I’m not saying she’s okay with that. So, I think she needs to be careful saying that, you know, politicians are in her prime.
Harlow continued to prod Lemon.
‘Are you talking about prime for, like, having kids? Or are you talking about a bonus for being president? she asked.
Lemon has since apologized but has been widely condemned, including by CNN CEO Chris Licht.
CNN President Chris Licht criticized Lemon’s comments as “disturbing, unacceptable and unfair to his co-hosts and ultimately a major distraction from the great work of this organization.”
Lemon has been absent from his morning show for two days in a row following his comments.
According to The New York Times, Licht rebuked Lemon during an editorial call on Friday, calling his comments “disturbing, unacceptable and unfair” and a “big distraction.”
Lemon said in a phone call with staff: ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. It was not my intention to offend anyone.
Monday’s show was hosted by Harlow and Sara Sidner in New York with Kaitlan Collins in Poland for President Joe Biden’s visit. But Lemon’s future at CNN seems to hang in the balance.
“There are ongoing discussions about Don’s future,” a person familiar with the matter told Confider. It’s a constant distraction.
According radaronline.comLemon’s coworkers have criticized him for having a “colossal ego” and believe he is planning to jump ship.
“He has a colossal ego and is the type of person who goes around saying he’s not going to take the blame for the failure of his show, that it’s not his fault and that the network is going under, and he shouldn’t have been removed from his prime time.” ‘ an insider told RadarOnline.
“The ratings are down a lot, the new boss is implementing strict new rules and nobody is happy. All of these people have been coddled with perks and pats on the back until now, and suddenly Don, Wolf Blitzer and others are at a point of “wow, we’re in trouble,” the source added.
Tensions on the network have continued to escalate since Licht arrived and insiders believe Lemon, and other top presenters, know they could be kicked out if ratings don’t improve.
“Don still thinks highly of himself and continues to put sensors in other places, although it’s going to be a tough sell,” the source said. ‘No one is going to want Don or any of his miserable co-workers with those bad grades behind them.’
Last week, inside sources told DailyMail.com that Lemon is “rude, self-righteous and downright sexist”, adding that “his apology meant nothing”.
They said: ‘Don has been skating on thin ice for so long and many wanted him fired in December when he freaked out on Kaitlin Collins for no reason. He was crying and it was so inappropriate.
Lemon apologized for his comments on the Thursday show in a tweet.
Regardless of her political affiliation, her comments that Nikki Haley was past her prime were sickening. Poppy was furious, as she should be, and she still is.
“He is rude, self-righteous and clearly sexist. Nikki did the right thing by calling him.
“His apology meant nothing and there is a lot of pressure to get it canned. It would be a shock if it wasn’t.
Haley herself responded to Lemon’s comments, saying, “It’s always the liberals who are the most sexist” in a tweet with a clip from the video segment.
Lemon apologized for his comments on the Thursday show, tweeting: “My reference to a woman’s ‘best’ this morning was naive and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I’m sorry.”
‘A woman’s age does not define her personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who try it every day.
