Anthony Albanese’s 21-year-old son has quietly become the prime minister’s greatest weapon – with Australians loving the close bond between the famous father and his child.

Born to Mr. Albanese and his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, Nathan stole election night from his father and won hearts across the country as the couple celebrated on stage together.

The Prime Minister grinned from ear to ear as Nathan officially graduated from Sydney University of Technology on Wednesday with a business degree – and in the past referred to his only child as his ‘lucky charm’.

The pair still live together at Mr Albanese’s home in Marrickville in inland Sydney, with the Labor leader revealing that he speaks with his son every day, wherever he is in the world.

“I have a way of making sure I talk to my son every day, and that’s a lucky charm for me,” he said.

‘We are close, we live together. He also spends time with his mother. But I am very proud of him. He has developed into a very fine young man.’

The father of one admitted he “didn’t see it coming” when former NSW Deputy Prime Minister Ms Tebbutt decided to end their marriage on New Year’s Day 2019.

Nathan, had just completed his HSC exams and turned 18 when Mrs. Tebbutt left his father.

The couple had been in a relationship for 30 years – 19 of which were married – and raised Nathan together.

Their split was made public in early January when a devastated Mr Albanian admitted the split had taken him by surprise.

“It was a very difficult period and that is the truth and I have acknowledged that,” he told ABC Radio in 2021.

“I think part of going through a rough patch and coming out the other side is recognizing that you’re going through it. I found it very heavy. The relationship was 30 years old.’

In March 2019, Mr Albanian took three weeks off and visited London and Portugal – a trip he credits for helping to heal after the breakup.

“You make plans in your head about what you think the future will look like and I saw the future as me and Carmel and Nathan and our dog going on,” he said.

Mr Albanese, 59, has since moved on with First State Super finance officer Jodie Haydon, 43, who is 16 years his junior. The pair were first spotted kissing in a chic Sydney restaurant in June 2020.

“Friends outside of politics who helped me through that difficult time advised me that if you get a shock in your life, you don’t change other things. I stayed in the house where I was with (my son) Nathan,’ he said.

Mr Albanese has devoted his life to Nathan and the Labor Party, which has held power as a member of Grayndler since 1996, takes over the opposition government in 2019 and becomes prime minister in May.

On election night, however, it was his son who stole the show as Australians swoon over the 21-year-old’s good looks.

‘Nathan Albanese is a very handsome young man. And Mommy Carmel is in the crowd and recognized! How beautiful,” one woman tweeted.

“Nathan Albanian, Australia’s most eligible bachelor,” said another.

The new prime minister thanked Nathan during his victory speech and paid tribute to his ‘lucky charm’.

“To my proudest achievement, my son, Nathan. Thank you, mate, for your love and support,” said the new prime minister.

“Your mother, who is here tonight, Carmel, we are both so proud of the caring, wonderful, smart young man you have become.”

The pair shared a tender moment onstage, which captured the hearts of adoring Aussies watching at home.

“Good old Nathan Albanese has all the look of ‘holy f**k, my father is the prime minister,'” one man tweeted.

‘More than a tear. Albo also thanked Carmel Tebbut (Nathan’s mother), his son Nathan and his partner Jodie Haydon. Says a lot about the man who is Albanian,’ said another woman.

‘Anthony Albanese is a good person, a decent person. Here he is with his ‘proudest achievement’, his son Nathan and his new partner,” a man posted on Twitter.

Mr Albanese revealed that the couple spent their first Father’s Day together since becoming Prime Minister in Canberra playing tennis.

“There is a tennis court at The Lodge – the only way I would live in a house with a tennis court was to become Prime Minister,” he said.

“Every year I just ask him to spend some time with me. That will be on the tennis court. So that’s the gift I asked for.’

“Will he let you win?” asked Triple M presenter Steve Graham.

‘No, he won’t let me win, he has my genes,’ replied Mr. Albanian.

“But luckily, you know, I’m fine—he needs to work on his volleys.”
