Sam Kerr won’t be lacking in support as she tries to send the Matildas to their first-ever Women’s World Cup final on Wednesday, and you can bet her partner Kristie Mewis will be screaming the loudest at Stadium Australia.

Kerr and Mewis are women’s football’s undisputed power couple, and the pair have amassed thousands of followers as their relationship has blossomed.

Mewis grew up in Hanson, Massachusetts, where she discovered her soccer talent at an early age. A hard-working midfielder, Mewis was way too good at the high school level, scoring 74 goals during her time on the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School team.

Her ability was quickly recognized and Mewis played alongside her younger sister Sam at the U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cups in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

Mewis enjoyed a great three-year spell at Boston College before heading to Australia in 2013 to sign her first professional contract, with W-League side Canberra United FC.

However, her stay in Australia did not last long. Mewis left after two games and scored two goals, as she was called up for FC Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League inaugural season.

Aside from brief stints in Japan and Germany, Mewis has spent the rest of her career in the United States, where she has played for the Boston Breakers, Washington Spirit, Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash and Gotham FC.

Off the pitch, Mewis is openly gay and dated English star Rachel Daly prior to her relationship with Kerr.

Mewis and Daly’s story began as teammates on the Dash. Their friendship blossomed into a romantic partnership in November 2017, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their on-field chemistry.

After two years together, Mewis and Daly decided to separate and keep the reasons behind their divorce private. Despite this, they remained teammates until 2021.

Mewis started a new chapter at Gotham FC, while Daly returned to England and joined Aston Villa.

“We are not private individuals. I like to share my story. I like to share who I am outside of football. Football is 5 percent of my life,” Kerr told British publication Gaffer earlier this year.

“We set little milestones and we set aside time during the week to watch the same show and FaceTime or have dinner together or something. But it is difficult.

Mewis said it was special for the couple to be role models for gay women who are not coming out for fear of homophobic abuse or society’s rejection.

“I think if we’re just dating and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, that means a lot to me . I like to share my relationship on social media,” said the American star.

Kerr revealed her biggest concern since entering her relationship with Mewis.

“What worries me the most is that our coaches or teammates don’t think we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it’s practice time or game time, it doesn’t come in,” Kerr said.

“I remember one time in Newcastle (Australia) when she filled in, we played against each other and we went against each other. We would kill each other. But I worry that people think we don’t take our careers seriously.’

“We did play a game against each other, but I thought her team was crazy. When I play, I’m such a helmsman and she (Mewis) got so mad,” Kerr said.
