Who is Peter Drury and why is Martin Tyler not on Sky Sports this season?

Peter Drury will be the voice of Sky Sports ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The 55-year-old’s first assignment will be Chelsea’s blockbuster Premier League clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

It is expected that Drury will focus on one match per week for the broadcaster, which would be on Sunday, Monday or midweek.

Drury replaces Martin Tyler, who left Sky in June after 33 years.

Who is Peter Druy?

Born in 1967, Drury is known for his iconic style of commentary.

He started his career at BBC Radio Leeds before moving to Five Live in 1994. He joined ITV four years later, before moving to BT Sport in 2013.

Mail Sport reported in June that Peter Drury will become Sky Sports’ voice in the Premier League following Tyler’s departure.

Drury, 55, was the voice of the Premier League on US broadcaster NBC Sports. He began his broadcasting career on local radio in Leeds in 1990.

It is believed that Drury will continue to present to American audiences. NBC is owned by Comcast, which also owns Sky.

Throughout his career to date, Drury has also commentated on FA Cup, Champions League and World Cup matches.

He is believed to be a supporter of both Watford and West Ham.

Outside of football, Drury is married to wife Vicky after the couple tied the knot in 1990. They also share three children.

Why isn’t Martin Tyler on Sky Sports?

Martin Tyler resigned from Sky Sports in June ahead of the new Premier League season.

Tyler was recognized by many as the voice of the Premier League and has become one of the most iconic commentators in football history.

In a statement to the Telegraph, he said: ‘In my humble opinion, the huge company that Sky is today has grown out of Sky Sports’ innovative and inspired coverage of the Premier League. It was a privilege to play a small part in the broadcasting history of the biggest league in the world.

“I’ve worked with legions of great professionals in all aspects of the television industry along the way. I thank them all for their support and expertise. It was an honor to be part of a very gifted team.”

What has Drury said about Sky Sports’ move?

“I am extremely excited to be joining Sky’s excellent roster of commentators,” said Drury.

“Working week in week out on the best games with a broadcaster that has been telling the Premier League story from the very beginning feels like the opportunity of my career and I can’t wait to get started.”

Gary Hughes, Sky Sports’ director of football, has said Drury will bring ‘a lot of energy and enthusiasm’.

“We look forward to welcoming Peter Drury to Sky Sports,” said Hughes.

“One of the game’s most poetic commentators, Peter will bring great energy and enthusiasm, as well as his award-winning broadcasting experience, to our unparalleled coverage of the Premier League.”
