Born to a Jewish family, he grew up in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, where he started a ski tuning shop in his parents’ basements – which would eventually net him hundreds of thousands of dollars.
An avid sports fan since childhood, Rubin used $2,500 bar mitzvah gifts to fund his shop, and with the help of his father, opened an official ski shop in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania called Mike’s Ski and Sport.
At age 16, he owed about $120,000 and was able to pay off his credit cards with a $37,000 loan from his father, paid to him with the understanding that he would attend college.
