Who is Mahmoud Abbas – the lawyer shot in a ‘targeted’ attack in Greenacre, Sydney

Mahmoud Abbas, a lawyer to Sydney’s underworld has been gunned down in broad daylight in what police believe was a targeted shooting in the city’s south-west.

Emergency services were called to a home on Narelle Crescent, Greenacre shortly before 10.30am on Wednesday after the solicitor was shot by ‘an unknown person’ in the torso and leg.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition, it’s understood he is currently undergoing emergency surgery.

Mr Abbas was gunned down on the same street where underworld figure Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad was shot dead while visiting an associate in April 2022. 

A crime scene has been established and investigations continue.

Who is Mahmoud Abbas?

Mr Abbas is a partner with Abbas Jacobs Lawyers, where he works with his brother, Mohomed and business partner Andrew Jacobs.

Mr Abbas has represented a range of high profile Sydney identities including former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer, ex-NRL player Jamil Hopoate and accused members of an ISIS-inspired terror cell. 

He also represented the four men who allegedly abducted a Hamze associate from the northern beaches.

Mr Abbas grew up in the Bankstown area and attended Bass High School before studying a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Commerce at Western Sydney University.

‘He and his brother were popular, they were both really into legal and business studies,’ a former student told Daily Mail Australia. 

‘His family are pretty well respected in Muslim community.’

Mr Abbas started his career working for well-known criminal defence lawyer Brett Galloway and is the son of a farmer from the NSW Snowy Mountains. 

Photos show Mr Abbas reaping the rewards of a career in law – travelling on glamorous international holidays, riding jetskies and posing with luxury vehicles.

A source said Mr Abbas is accustomed to the finer things in life and in the past has travelled with former client Salim Mehajer.

‘He flies first class and travels private jets, ‘ the source said.

Why was Mahmoud Abbas shot? 

It is still unclear why Abbas was shot in broad daylight. 

‘Investigations are in their infancy; however it’s believed to be a targeted incident,’ a police statement read.

Local detectives are being assisted by the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups and Raptor Squad in the investigations.

 This is the latest in a string of shootings, after three people were shot Mayvic Street, Greenacre on Sunday morning.
