It’s rare that a single play defines a sports team’s season, but on Tuesday the Chicago White Sox may have made one play that symbolized just how disastrous their 2024 season has been.
In the second inning of their game against the Baltimore Orioles, former White Sox star Eloy Jimenez hit a routine pop fly against the Southsiders.
Several players attempted to catch the ball, including third baseman Miguel Vargas and left fielder Andrew Benintendi.
Vargas jumped for the ball and collided with Benintendi, causing the ball to fall between them and roll away.
Benintendi had to pick up the ball to make a move, but could not prevent the score.

Vargas was taken out of the race after the collision with a graze wound to his right eye
Orioles announcer Kevin Brown was stunned as he described the situation, saying, “Oh no! Oh my God. The White Sox just went completely White Sox.”
To top it all off, Vargas was pulled from the bout after sustaining a graze wound to his right eye.
Fans on social media also reacted in shock, wondering how a team could be so bad.
One user on Twitter wrote: ‘Every day I say “it can’t get any worse”… and somehow it does.’
Another said: ‘The 2024 White Sox need to go 8-14 the rest of the season to avoid becoming the worst baseball team of the modern era. That’ll be fun.’
“This team really doesn’t deserve to get 31 wins. I think they are performing above expectations,” another user wrote.
“Jerry Reinsdorf wants Chicago taxpayers to give him $1 billion for a new stadium for this baseball team,” another report said.
“Friends of mine who are White Sox fans, if you aren’t already, please stop watching this team this season for the sake of your mental health. This can’t be good for the team,” another user said.

Chicago has just four wins since the All-Star break and is on track for mediocrity, having already been eliminated from the playoffs.
The White Sox are just 11 losses shy of the most losses in the modern era of Major League Baseball.
The record is currently held by the 1962 New York Mets, who went 40-120 in their debut season.
