The Biden White House criticized Donald Trump on Saturday after he called for the “termination” of the US Constitution.
On Sunday, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday that he “absolutely” rejects Trump’s calls and suggested that the explosive comments could have a negative impact on his 2024 presidential campaign.
The former president made the explosive statement in the early hours of Saturday after Elon Musk claimed to have revealed evidence that Twitter, which he recently acquired for $44 billion, worked with Democrats to tip the scales in the 2020 election.
It focused on correspondences primarily between top Twitter employees about the site’s suppression of the infamous New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop that was published in October 2020.
Trump responded with a lengthy tirade on his Truth Social app, calling for a complete overhaul of the US electoral system and a suspension of constitutional norms.
White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates quickly rebuked Trump in a scathing statement: “Attacking the Constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation and must be universally condemned.”
“You can’t love America only when you win,” Bates said. ‘The American Constitution is a sacrosanct document that for more than 200 years has ensured that freedom and the rule of law prevail in our great country.’
President Joe Biden’s White House on Saturday condemned Donald Trump for calling for the ‘termination’ of the US Constitution.
“The Constitution unites the American people, regardless of party, and elected leaders are sworn to uphold it. It is the ultimate monument to all Americans who have given their lives to defeat the self-serving despots who abused their power and trampled on fundamental rights.”
House Republican Rep. Mike Turner told CBS News’ Face The Nation of Trump’s angry comments: “It’s certainly not consistent with the oath that we all take.”
“I vehemently disagree with the statement that Trump has made,” he said.
Just before 8 a.m. Saturday morning, Trump took to Truth Social to claim that Musk’s exposé, published by journalist Matt Taibbi, proved 2020 was “fraudulent” and called for removing current election laws from the Constitution. from the US
‘So with the disclosure of MASSIVE AND WIDESPREAD FRAUD AND DECEPTION by working closely with Big Tech, the DNC and the Democratic Party, do they release the results of the 2020 presidential election and declare the LEGAL WINNER, or do they have a NEW ELECTIONS? the former president was enraged.
‘A massive fraud of this type and magnitude allows the termination of all rules, regulations and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great “Founders” did not want, and would not approve, False and Fraudulent Elections’.
Republican Rep. Mike Turner, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, also rejected Trump’s comments, saying they “are not consistent with the oath we all take.”
Turner went a step further on Sunday, suggesting it could hurt the former president as the 2024 election cycle opens, with Trump thus far the only Republican candidate to formally declare a campaign.
“There’s a political process that has to go on before someone is a favorite and anyone is even the party’s nominee,” said House Republican Intel.
“And I think, in response to your question, that people will certainly take a statement like this into account when evaluating a candidate.”
The “Twitter files” dubbed by Musk show Twitter employees going back and forth trying to justify their censorship of the Hunter Biden story under the site’s hacked materials rules. It seems many senior platform officials were doubtful whether Hunter Biden’s laptop was accessed through unscrupulous means.
Taibbi also provides screenshots showing Twitter employees complying with Biden campaign requests to remove certain links, a practice followed by both campaigns at the time.
The links sent by Biden’s team allegedly included nude photos of Hunter Biden that were reportedly posted without his consent.
While Musk suggested that Democrats might have helped violate the First Amendment, in his report, Taibbi notes that the Trump administration, in power at the time, asked Twitter the same questions.
Trump complained that the federal government should be investigating alleged “corruption” rather than the classified files he improperly seized from the White House in January 2021, in another Truth Social post shortly after midnight Saturday.
Trump’s call came after Elon Musk chaired Twitter’s posting of internal communications related to a New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop.
He called on the federal government to investigate Twitter’s alleged censorship effort over his investigation of handling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home.
Trump also called on his supporters to “take back our country” in a post Saturday night.
‘Wow! That’s a great story about Twitter and various forms of government fraud, including, specifically, voter fraud. The same level of fraud took place with the other big tech companies, if not worse (if that’s even possible?),’ Trump wrote.
‘WE LIVE IN A VERY CORRUPT COUNTRY AND AS THEY ARE SAYING ALL OVER THE INTERNET, “NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AND FBI ARE TOTALLY CORRUPT.” But they will continue to investigate “boxes” that were taken legally and openly from the WH’
In an even earlier post made just before 11 p.m. Friday night, Trump called on his supporters to “take back our country” as he launched his increasingly angry tirade about Musk’s Twitter files.
‘I’m glad everyone is now seeing the light on what I’ve been saying loud and clear for the last two years, that the 2020 presidential election was rigged and stolen by a combination of Democrats, Big Tech, “law enforcement” and other bad actors,’ wrote the former president.
‘Unfortunately, we have become a corrupt country, perhaps one of the most corrupt in the world. We MUST right this horrible mistake and take our country back!’
