To the surprise of everyone (except perhaps lead actor Tom Cruise), Top Gun: Maverick blew up the global box office, becoming the biggest movie of 2022 (so far) and one of the most successful Hollywood sequels of all time.
Director Joseph Kosinski’s action-packed story about an aging flying ace won over critics and audiences alike — we gave the film five stars in our glowing review — and served as a timely reminder that Marvel movies aren’t the only thing happening when it comes to comes to contemporary success stories on the big screen.
It’s no wonder, then, that Top Gun fans are eager to learn when they’ll be able to enjoy Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s long-awaited return from the comfort of their own homes. And thankfully, after months of waiting, we now have some concrete information to share.
Top Gun: Maverick VOD release date
Top Gun: Maverick flew into cinemas May 27, 2022but the movie performed so well, so long that Paramount chose to run it in theaters well into October.
Top Gun: Maverick became available for purchase on streaming services on August 23, 2022 – some 91 days after its theatrical debut. You can buy the movie now AppleTV (opens in new tab), Vudu (opens in new tab), Amazon (opens in new tab) and other VOD platforms for $19.99 / £13.99, which is quite a good deal considering the download price of other blockbuster movies in recent years.
That post-theatrical release schedule matches Maverick’s Paramount stablemate, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which arrived in theaters on VOD platforms about three months after its release.
If you want to watch Top Gun: Maverick from a physical disc, the movie’s Blu-Ray release date rolled up November 1, 2022which means it’s now on sale in most regions.
Top Gun: Maverick Paramount Plus release date
Paramount has confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick will release exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, UK and Australia December 22, 2022. The film’s UK streaming release date was announced in October, before Paramount confirmed its identical US release date in November.

The star of the movie, Tom Cruise, once the defender of the movie experience, wholeheartedly resisted the temptation to release Top Gun: Maverick directly to streaming services after a spate of pandemic delays stretching back to June 2019.
When asked at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival if he’d ever considered debuting the film on streamers, Cruise simply said, “That’s not going to happen. Ever. I make films for the big screen.”
And boy, did the actor’s defiance pay off for Paramount. At the time of writing, Top Gun: Maverick has grossed a whopping $1.45 billion at the worldwide box office, a figure that puts the film 11th on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. In the years since the start of the global pandemic, only Spider-Man: No Way Home has brought in more money. It’s no wonder then that Cruise and Paramount chose to extend Top Gun: Maverick’s theatrical run as long as they did.
So to clarify, while the movie is now available for purchase on various VOD streamers, Top Gun: Maverick is coming to Paramount Plus on December 22, 2022 in the US, UK, and Australia.
By the way, Paramount Plus is now available in more regions than ever. The service recently launched in the UK, debuted in the US last year and costs $9.99 / £6.99 per month (or $4.99 per month to serve with ads, if you’re in the US).
However, in our opinion, Paramount Plus can’t yet compete with Netflix and Disney Plus – and studio executives hope Top Gun: Maverick changes that reality in December.
