When can Wrexham earn promotion to the Football League?

The National League’s automatic promotion race could soon be concluded with Wrexham now four points ahead of Notts County… but when can the Welsh side win the title? And how many games are left?

  • National League leader Wrexham close in on automatic promotion
  • The team is currently at the top of the table with only two matches left to play
  • The Welsh club is currently on 107 points, four points ahead of Notts County

National League leaders Wrexham are approaching a dramatic return to the Football League with just two games left to play.

The side are currently top of the table, four points ahead of Notts County. Phil Parkinson’s side defeated Yeovil 3-0 last night and came within a stone’s throw of the title.

After their win against County last week, it has put Wrexham at the helm for a chance at automatic promotion. The Red Dragons, backed by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, came from behind to win 3-2 against County last week. Ben Foster, who signed a short-term contract with the club in March, saved a late penalty from Cedwyn Scott to secure all three points for Wrexham.

Unlike most divisions, only one team can be automatically promoted to League 2 from the National League, with one team advancing through the playoffs.

When can Wrexham be promoted?

With two games left to play, Wrexham need to reach 110 points before they can receive automatic promotion and win the title.

Currently the league leaders are four points ahead of Notts County by 107 points after winning their game in hand last night.

After a win against Yeovil, Parkinson’s men only need three points to clinch the title.

Their next game after their confrontation with Yeovil is a home game against Boreham Wood on Saturday 22nd April.

Can the promotion race continue to the final match?

A home win this weekend is enough to see Wrexham promoted back to the Football League, regardless of Notts County’s results.

Should the league leaders lose to Boreham Wood, it means the Wales side may have to wait until the final game to secure promotion, provided County can keep up the pressure.

The Parkinson’s men travel to Torquay United on the day of the season on Saturday 29 April.

Notts County will look to push the league leaders to their limits and will play Maidstone United and York City in their last two games. The maximum number of points they can achieve is 109.

Wrexham have not been in the Football League since their relegation from League 2 in 2008

When was Wrexham last in the Football League?

Wrexham will be eager to gain promotion back to League Two for the first time since their relegation in the 2007/08 season.

Before relegation, the side spent 87 years in the Football League. A 2–0 defeat to Hereford United on 22 April 2008 meant they would be relegated to the National League.

The Welsh side were relegated with just two games to spare and would end the season on a low with 40 points from 46 games.

Wrexham have since competed in the fifth tier of English football and they have missed out on promotion five times during the play-offs.
