When can Southampton be relegated from the Premier League?
Ruben Selles’ Southampton team suffered another poor result after their defeat to Nottingham Forest and are on the brink of relegation… but when can the Saints be officially relegated?
- Southampton are on the verge of relegation after losing to Nottingham Forest
- The Saints are currently 20th in the table and eight points from safety
- Ruben Selles’ team will meet Marco Silva’s Fulham in Saint Mary’s this weekend
Southampton suffered another defeat recently and are on the verge of relegation from the Premier League.
Ruben Selles’ side were beaten 4-3 by Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest on Monday and have not won a game since March.
The Saints are currently at the bottom of the league table in a dismal season for the club.
After parting ways with Ralph Hasenhuttl in November, the club appointed Nathan Jones in an attempt to bring Southampton to the table. However, Jones was sacked in February after winning just one of his eight league games. Selles was then appointed interim manager of the club until the end of the season, but things are not getting any better for the side.
But when can Southampton be relegated from the Premier League? Mail Sport provides the answers below.

Ruben Selles has won just one game since he was appointed interim manager of the club in February
When can Southampton be relegated?
Southampton can officially relegate this weekend if it drops points at home against Fulham on Saturday.
The club is currently six points behind Leicester City and Leeds United, both of whom have better goal difference than the Saints.
Following Everton’s shock 5-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday, the Toffees are currently 17th in the standings with 32 points.
With the Saints currently on 24 points, a defeat to Marco Silva’s side this weekend will mean the club can take a maximum of 30 points from their last two games.
Even if they play at home against Fulham this weekend, it still won’t be enough to keep them in the division.
Southampton will go down this weekend if they drop points at home against Marco Silva’s Fulham
What are their remaining fixtures?
With Fulham still to come, it’s fair to say the club’s remaining fixtures after this weekend are tough.
The Saints travel to Brighton on Sunday 21 May for the penultimate game of the season.
The Selles teams will take on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at home on Sunday 28 May in the last game of the season.
Southampton’s remaining fixtures, as well as kick-off times, for the remainder of the season are as follows:
- Fulham (H) – May 13 at 3pm
- Brighton (A) – May 21 at 2pm
- Liverpool (H) – May 28 at 4:30pm
The club has three games of the season left against Fulham, Brighton and Liverpool
When were they last in the Championship?
It has been 11 years since the club was last in the Championship. The 2011/12 season saw the club earn promotion to the Premier League after finishing second.
The Saints finished just one point behind champions Reading and two points above West Ham, third.
Rickie Lambert was the league’s top goalscorer that season with 27 as he helped guide the Saints back to England’s top division for the first time since 2005.
