As millions of Australians take advantage of the Australia Day public holiday, many businesses will be opening their doors in the hope of attracting people into the shops on Friday.

The last bank holiday of the summer means many people are hoping for a barbecue or a day at the beach, weather permitting.

Most Woolies stores across the country will remain open on Australia Day, with a few exceptions

But for those who forgot to buy extra sandwiches or need a few thongs to wear, there are plenty of shops open.

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed most stores will be open in Victoria, NSW, the NT and the ACT.

In Queensland, all stores will be open except Charters Towers, Bowen and Ayr, which will close at 2pm on Thursday as Cyclone Kirrily accelerates towards the region.

In Western Australia, all stores are open, except Esperance and Katanning.

Customers are encouraged to check the opening times of individual supermarkets to ensure they don’t miss anything.

Aldi

Most Aldi stores across Australia open on Australia Day, but close earlier nationally at 8pm.

Customers should check the Aldi website to check the opening hours of all stores.

Bottle shops

Several Kmart stores will be closed in South Australia, including Firle, Tea Tree, Munno Para, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, West Lakes, Port Noarlunga, Port Adelaide and Churchill.

The remaining stores in South Australia remain open.

In NSW, all stores are open except the Stanhope Gardens store, which closes permanently the day before Australia Day.

The Esperance Khub in WA is also closed on Friday.
