We’re getting closer to Halloween – just ask our Halloween countdown calendar! So once again it’s no surprise that we’re getting more horror options with our new TV options for the week. But that is not the case all we get. This week in particular brings us the return of Lower deckswhich is back for its fifth and, sadly, final season.
But if you’re more interested in horror (which, let’s be honest, who can blame you!), then you have two extremes to choose from: the comedic style of What we do in the shadowswhich also returns for its final season with a lot of buzz about who is a vampire and who isn’t; or you can go for the more gonzo (free) walloping Hellbound season 2, which promises to pick up the chaos of season 1 with more religious madness and smoke monsters.
These are the best TV premieres to watch this week.
Genre: Hell in a Handbasket Horror (with Monsters)
Release date: October 21, with all episodes
Showrunner/creators: Choi Gyu-seok and Yeon Sang-Ho
Form: Kim Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-cheol and more
Like season 1 of Hellbound was the end of the world as we know it, then season 2 probably won’t leave the show’s characters feeling good. In a world where demons apparently come to the mortal realm to claim those cursed with a countdown clock, Hellbound season 2 picks up after the astonishing twist at the end of the season: what happens if someone whose clock is set to zero doesn’t die?
What we do in the Shadows season 6
Genre: Vampire nonsense (free)
Release date: October 21, with three episodes
Showrunner/creator: Paul Simms
Form: Harvey Guillén, Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry and more
Your favorite Long Island vampires are back! Sadly, this is the final season of the FX show, but rest assured, there’s still a lot to do between now and then. Like Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) evaluating his life after becoming a full-fledged vampire: who is he, if not someone he knows? What, if anything, will happen to Nadia’s (Natasia Demetriou) nightclub? Will Jackie ride Daytona again? These are the questions that concern us night day.
New shows on Paramount Plus
Genre: Goofy animated Star Trek
Release date: October 24
Showrunner/creator: Mike McMahan
Form: Jack Quaid, Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero and more
Things are going great on the Cerritos – at least, according to one captain’s logbook. In reality it is Lower decks season 5, and there’s a ferocious (maybe) axolotl, a bunch of Kims, and a big boulder, just for starters.
New shows on Apple TV Plus
Genre: Psychological thriller
Release date: October 25, with two episodes
Showrunner/creator: Sara Thorp
Form: Billy Crystal, Judith Light, Rosie Perez and more
Eli (Billy Crystal) is a recently widowed child psychologist. He is understandably quite impatient, and even more so when his next client is a troubled young boy who has been sent around to foster parents because they found him ‘unnerving’. As if that wasn’t enough of a puzzle for Eli to figure out, the child seems to have a terrifying connection to Eli’s past – like, “can’t stop drawing the vision Eli keeps having of a specific house.”
