What to expect from Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is a third-person shooter and multiplayer game. You matchmake a game with a team of six, and each player then selects a hero from the Marvel Comics universe. Only one person per team can play as an individual hero, so you can’t play a game filled with Spider-Mans (at least not at launch).
Heroes fit into one of three roles:
When your team and heroes arrive, you’ll be tasked with one of a few different objective modes, such as capturing a point on a few different maps or escorting a chariot. In the quick match queue, each team plays only one game, and the winner is determined based on the victory of the attacking or defending side. But in Competitive Queue, matches consist of multiple rounds of a goal, and the winner is determined based on who wins the most rounds.
If you’re familiar with Blizzard Overwatch and other hero shooters, Marvel Rivals should be quite comparable. But the familiar Marvel heroes (who all have quite unique visual designs) and the third-person perspective give the game a fresh feel, so it’s not guaranteed that you’ll love it or hate it based on of your feelings about other games in the genre.
Marvel Rivals is also based on a seasonal model. At launch, Season 0, “Doom’s Rise,” will last approximately one month. Season 1 starts in early January 2025, lasts three months and adds new maps, heroes and abilities.
