Many offices and businesses close their doors on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

The holiday – which commemorates the victims of the civil war – falls on the last Monday in May every year. Originally known as ‘Decoration Day’, it was officially recognized in 1971.

While most banks and post offices will close their doors for the day, major shops will remain open – and all national parks will open with free entry.

Here, DailyMail.com explains what’s open and closed on the holiday.

Martin Luther King Day is a banking and stock market holiday, which means major banks will all close their local branches. Wells Fargo has confirmed that its locations will be closed

Banks

Memorial Day is a bank and stock market holiday, which means major banks will all be closing their local branches. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will also be closed.

However, their ATMs will function as normally as online services. Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Truist, Citibank and Capital One are all closed Monday.

Postal services

The US Postal Service will be closed that day, meaning no residential or business deliveries will be made. The post offices will also be closed.

UPS will also not be picking up or delivering packages during the holiday, and some UPS store locations will be open limited hours.

However, FedEx services will continue as normal and its offices will remain open the company’s website. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will operate a ‘custom service’.

However, rival wholesalers such as Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club remain open. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s and most other national chains remain open.

Some may have adjusted opening hours, so it is advisable to check their website to see when your local branch is open.

Restaurant chains

All major restaurant chains are also open normally. McDonald’s, KFC, Applebee’s, Burger King and Chick-fil-A should be open during their usual hours, although these may vary by location.

Libraries

Public libraries – along with non-critical government services such as city offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles – are also closed for the holiday.
