The United Nations is evaluating the future of its mission in Afghanistan after the Taliban banned women from working.
Decades of war since the 1970s have plunged Afghanistan into a terrible humanitarian crisis. About 97 percent of the population lives in poverty, while 28 million will need help to survive this year.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban has introduced a series of restrictions on women’s freedoms, including a ban on women from working.
The United Nations considers this unacceptable because it threatens the work of aid organizations.
Senior UN officials met in Doha and Kabul this week — without the Taliban — to decide on the future of the mission.
