The weather in Bridgetown, Barbados has been the talk of the town since India reached the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a rain-hit semi-final against England in Guyana. Now the final, scheduled for Saturday, June 29, is threatened by a hurricane that could form as early as Saturday evening and ruin the reserve day for the final, namely Sunday, June 30.
Tropical Storm Beryl grows into a hurricane
A storm is raging in the Caribbean north of Venezuela and southeast of Puerto Rico, but the system became a tropical storm late Friday when sustained winds reached 39 mph (62 kph), according to a New York Times report.
It has further been predicted that this Atlantic storm named ‘Beryl’ could become a hazard for the 2024 T20 World Cup final as it could become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2024 season. He is said to be heading towards Barbados and could reach the country’s coast on Saturday evening.
How could Storm Beryl disrupt the 2024 T20 World Cup final?
At 74 mph. a storm becomes a hurricane, and at 4:00 am local time in the Windward Islands the speed of the Beryl storm had increased to 50 miles per hour. If the storm continues to grow, approximately 100-150mm of rain is expected in Barbados between Saturday and Sunday nights.
Therefore, if the final match between South Africa and India of the 2024 T20 World Cup is not completed by Saturday evening, it could be completely wiped out.
What happens if the match is postponed on the scheduled and reserved day?
In that event, both South Africa and India will be declared joint winners of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. A similar situation occurred during the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy when both India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners after the match in Colombo had failed.
