Thousands are racing to check their hot water systems after a plumbing company revealed what happens when they aren’t cleaned or properly services for long periods of time.
Service Today Australia shared the ‘disgusting’ TikTok video showing what was lurking inside a ‘neglected’ rusty hot water system as a warning to their followers this week.
Water that sits inside filthy unserviced hot water systems can negatively effect your skin’s pores, hair and clothes as is passes through to the shower, taps and washing machine.
Nathan, a plumbing expert from the company, told FEMAIL you should have your hot water system serviced every one to five years, depending on the model.

A shocking TikTok video shows what happens to hot water systems that aren’t serviced. In the clip posted by Service Today Australia, a build up compound of minerals and rust can be seen inside as the tank hadn’t been cleaned for ‘years’
A number of key signs could also indicate if the system needs servicing – such as poor water flow, leaking of the tank, the temperature of the water and the system’s age.
‘If your water has experienced extreme water discolouration the unit is past recommended service and may require a replacement,’ Nathan said.
‘Hot water valves have five-year replacement life before creating a safety issue.’
Nathan said the tank in the TikTok video was more than 13 years old and the claims the owner was unaware when it was last serviced – if ever. The all-important anode rod, which sits inside the tank from the top, also hadn’t been replaced (pictured: a new rod compared to a damaged rod)
Nathan said the tank in the TikTok video was more than 13 years old and claims the owner was unaware when it was last serviced – if ever.
The all-important anode rod, which sits inside the tank from the top, also hadn’t been replaced.
‘The anode rod is fitted to the inside of the hot water system’s tank; It’s made of magnesium or aluminum, and through an electrochemical process it attracts limestone, iron and other mineral particles that are usually present in water,’ Nathan explained.
‘Essentially, the anode rod works by attracting the corrosion process (that would otherwise harm the tank) to itself first.
‘In other words, it “sacrifices” itself to extend the life of your water heater.’
The rod should be replaced every five years to prevent rust and deterioration of the hot water system.

Your hair and skin can also become dry over time due to the minerals in the water, which may block pores and cause acne.
Over time you may also notice you skin requires moisturising to stay hydrated.
The video has since been viewed more than 257,000 times and received a flood of comments from other TikTok users.
‘Imagine the water pipes,’ one person wrote, another added: ‘That’s why you don’t ever fill the kettle from the hot water tap!’
Those wanting to ensure their water is pure enough to shower in may also wish to purchase a shower filter.
