What happened to Jim Carrey’s $300M fortune? Comedian only filmed new Sonic flick because he ‘needs the money’

Jim Carrey may once have been the king of Hollywood paychecks, but these days he’s a bit more elusive on the silver screen.

The 62-year-old actor, who earned a whopping $20 million in 1996 for films like The Cable Guy, now admits that his return to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has more to do with balancing his checkbook than pure passion.

Carrey enjoyed a legendary run with hits like Liar Liar, The Truman Show, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Bruce Almighty, but his star began to dim in the late 2000s.

Despite once having an estimated net worth of $300 million, Carrey still has to make sure the bills get paid – which is why he’s coming out of ‘retirement’.

“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a little complicated, and it’s just… it’s just… I bought a lot of things and I have the money, honestly ‘, he joked on Monday on the red carpet of the premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in London.

But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all about the salary; Carrey quickly added, “At the same time, it had heart, and that’s why I did it the first time. There was something beautiful at the heart of the piece.’

Of course, he couldn’t resist throwing in his signature humor and concluding, “I hope it will bring families together and cure various diseases.”

However, it appears that finances are on Carrey’s mind as he is still waiting for a big payout for his beautiful Los Angeles mansion, which is still on the market after a series of his price cuts, according to Realtor.com.

The five-bedroom, nine-bathroom Brentwood estate was initially listed in February 2023 for a lofty $28.9 million, but has now been reduced to a more palatable $19 million.

Two months after putting the property on the market, he lowered the price to $27 million, and in October 2023, he lowered that number to $24 million.

And in May 2024, the Truman Show actor dropped the price to $21.9 million, bringing the total cut to $7 million.

When he first put his house up for sale in February, he said The New York Post that he was ready for ‘changes’ in his life.

“For thirty years it has been a sanctuary for me, but I don’t spend much time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it as much as I do,” he told the outlet in a statement.

‘Cha cha cha cha… Changes!’ he added while referencing David Bowie’s iconic song.

Finances appear to be on Carrey's mind, though, as he's also still eyeing a big payout for his gorgeous Los Angeles mansion, which is still on the market after a series of his price cuts, according to Realtor.com
