Chelsea and Manchester City provided the fans with a spectacle on Sunday and a number of big names quickly showed their appreciation.
Pep Guardiola’s champions led at Stamford Bridge three times but were pushed back each time, with former City man Cole Palmer holding his nerve to earn his new team a point with an injury-time penalty.
The Premier League champions thought they had secured victory through Rodri’s goal, but four minutes from time they were deflected off the hapless Thiago Silva, but were left stunned in the final seconds when substitute Armando Broja burst into the penalty area and fouled Ruben Dias, with Palmer, sent his penalty under pressure to delight the home fans.
And the likes of Gary Lineker and Michael Owen had similar thoughts after the match.
“What a game,” they both tweeted, and that was the general consensus from viewers across the country.
Paul Merson also tweeted ‘what a game’ before adding that ‘Chelsea have now set the bar. If you play like that every week you will fly higher in the league… Sterling, Palmer and Gallagher are very good.”
Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards was also hugely impressed by what he saw.
He said: ‘Exceptional, hectic, fantastic, it had everything, goals, poor defending, good play, tackles, it had absolutely everything.’
City scored first when Spanish defender Marc Cucurella tugged on Haaland’s shirt and was awarded a VAR-controlled penalty, which the Norwegian coolly converted in the 24th minute.
Five minutes later, Chelsea’s 39-year-old Brazilian defender Thiago Silva headed the ball into the net.
Former City striker Raheem Sterling tapped in after a stumble in defense from Josko Gvardiol allowed Reece James to cross in the 37th minute.
But Chelsea’s lead lasted less than ten minutes before defender Manuel Akanji headed in City’s equalizer in injury time.
Haaland scored his second a minute after the restart, but in the 67th minute of a breathless second half the home side equalized through Nicolas Jackson.
Rodri’s strike in the 86th minute looked to have secured victory for the champions, but he conceded a penalty in the 94th minute which Palmer rifled home.
