- The man, 22, was caught on CCTV stealing from a jewelery store in Warsaw
- He was temporarily arrested for three months and faces a prison sentence of up to ten years
Surveillance footage captured the moment a 22-year-old thief stood motionless in a Polish department store, posing as a mannequin, allegedly waiting to steal.
The man held his position until closing time, then came back to life, bag at the ready, and allegedly proceeded to break into a jewelry store in Warsaw.
“When he felt safe, he went hunting and robbed the island of jewelry,” Assistant Inspector Robert Szumiata of the Śródmieście District Police Station said in a statement.
This was not the first time the man had allegedly stolen from the department store.
Szumiata said that on another occasion the man allegedly waited until closing time again before grabbing a bite to eat at a nearby bar. He then maneuvered under a steel curtain into another store and allegedly grabbed designer clothes.

It was “known” that the man had stolen from another “gallery” and taken money and other items, Assistant Inspector Robert Szumiata said
‘On the way he stopped again at a well-known bar for another meal. But his luck finally ran out when he was spotted and captured by security personnel who called the police.”
He said it was “known” that the 22-year-old had committed thefts and burglaries at another gallery, “where he took money from various tills after closing and attempted to steal other items.”
Szumiata confirmed that the Department for Combating Property Crime has charged the man with burglary and theft.
At the request of the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office of Śródmieście Północ, the court decided to temporarily arrest the man for three months.
The Criminal Code provides for up to 10 years in prison for these crimes, he said.
