Whalan house explosion: Fears for residents after massive explosion rocks suburb

A massive house explosion has rocked a western Sydney suburb, sparking fears residents may be trapped inside.

The blast occurred on the second floor of a townhouse in Whalan in Sydney’s west, while Fire and Rescue NSW was called to Waikanda Crescent just before 1pm.

Emergency services responded to a call about an explosion in a unit.

Calls were made saying windows had been smashed and people could be heard screaming.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said the house had “extensive damage” and a neighboring house was also affected. Sydney Morning Herald.

Fire and Rescue NSW is searching units for residents, with one person missing and an elderly woman being treated for shock.

Whalan resident Kathleen Morris said the sound of the explosion was tremendous.

‘I heard a big bang and the whole house shook. “Everyone came out of the house wondering what happened,” she said.
