Two people have been killed in a house fire in western Sydney. An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to the inferno on Lily Street, in Wetherill Park, at around 6.45am on Wednesday.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said when crews arrived the two-story home was well ablaze and they were acting on reports that at least two people were inside.

Emergency services managed to get two residents out of the house, an 81-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, but they could not be revived.

Firefighters were met with ‘heavy fire’ on arrival as residents banded together to try and put out the blaze.

“But their efforts were in vain…one was taken to hospital and I have heard he is fine and [it] was done as a precaution,” Chief Inspector Johnstone said.

“It’s a tight-knit neighborhood and people have expressed their grief.”

Firefighters entered the house in an attempt to save the occupants, believing as many as six people were trapped.

“Two people who were inside and located by the fire department were brought out,” he said.

“There were initial reports that there were four other people in the house, but we don’t think that’s the case.”

Two neighbors who helped put out the fire were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Neighbor Josephine described the elderly woman as ‘sweet’.

‘She was a very sweet, humble lady who liked to have a chat. Always full of nice words and a big beautiful smile,’ she said.

Josephine said she was awakened at 6:45 a.m. by the sound of police sirens and the smell of smoke.

“I looked out and saw fire and saw a lot of smoke — thick smoke,” she said.
