Westpac, St George experience another major outage

Westpac and St George are experiencing disruptions for the third day in a row.

Bank customers have become furious this week after repeated outages left them unable to use online banking or the Westpac and St George apps.

Many have complained that they no longer have access to their money as both banks try to assure their customers that they are solving the problem.

‘Westpac has been eliminated for the third day in a row. It’s really not good enough. Their job is to facilitate the payment system and there appears to be a system error here. People can’t access their money, can’t go shopping, can’t pay their staff, etc. Please help!’ one person wrote on X.

‘It’s a 3rd time? How many times more? I am planning to change banks after being a customer for 20 years. It can’t go on any longer,” said another.

Westpac has apologized to customers for the third time this week.

‘We are aware that customers are experiencing further difficulties accessing online and mobile banking. Our teams are currently working on a solution to the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates here,” a spokesperson said.

St George issued the same statement.

The problems at both banks were resolved on Monday and Tuesday, but the problem occurred again on Wednesday.

As of 8am on Wednesday, almost 1,700 complaints about Westpac had been made to Downdetector.

For St. George, that number peaked at 270 complaints Wednesday morning.

Thousands of Westpac and St George customers had reported the same problems on Monday and Tuesday.

The reason for the disruptions is not yet known.

It comes just days after Westpac ended cardless cash withdrawals, requiring customers to use a physical bank card to withdraw money from an ATM.

“As part of the ongoing review of our products and services, Westpac will no longer offer the cardless cash withdrawal feature,” Westpac announced.

The bank claimed the change was part of an ongoing review of its ‘products and services’.

It highlighted that customers can still withdraw cash from Westpac ATMs across Australia as long as they use their physical card, and cash transactions can also be made at branches across the country.

Westpac also confirmed that cardless cash deposits would still be available to customers.
