Mail Sport can reveal that the Championship side have opened an internal investigation into the claims after receiving a written complaint signed by more than one person.

Following receipt of the correspondence, the Midlands club are obliged to investigate the matter, although there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by the suspect at this stage.

However, sources indicate that the complaint is being treated with the utmost seriousness.

One of the complainants is said to have become so angry about the alleged behavior of the employee in question that they are considering severing ties with the club.

In a club statement, West Brom said: ‘West Bromwich Albion Football Club can confirm that an employee has been suspended pending an independent investigation into allegations of discriminatory behaviour.

‘The club takes a zero-tolerance approach to discriminatory behavior and is committed to upholding the principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity.

“The suspension, which is in accordance with club policy, is not an indication of guilt. Consequently, the employee has the right to privacy during this process.

‘The club will make no further comment until the conclusion of the independent investigation, which will be conducted by a leading UK law firm.’

West Brom has a history of taking strong action against all forms of racial prejudice.

In October last year they indefinitely banned a supporter found guilty of a racially aggravated public order offense during their home match against Huddersfield Town on March 11, 2022.

In 2021, another fan was also banned for life from The Hawthorns after being found guilty of racially abusing midfielder Romaine Sawyers on social media.
