Things may not be looking so rosy for West Bromwich Albion off the pitch, but Carlos Corberan has built a team there that is well capable of winning promotion back to the Premier League this season.

His side recorded an eye-catching victory over high-flying Ipswich Town here thanks to goals from Darnell Furlong and Grady Diangana at the start of each half, handing the visitors only their second league defeat of the season.

Off-the-field problems with Albion’s bleak financial picture and the desire among fans for a change of ownership are not reflected by the team who, after a mixed start, now sit in fifth place following a run of four wins in five games .

“The result was a result of the performance,” the West Brom boss said. ‘This championship demands an excellent level every time you are on the football field. I see the team playing with a lot of resilience, personality and maturity and that is the key.”

Furlong headed his side into the lead within five minutes, meeting Matt Phillips’ corner at the post to fire the ball across goal and into the far post.

For their second goal, Wallace had the opportunity to break speed on the counter before feeding Brandon Thomas-Asante to calmly play in forward partner Diangana, who fired in off the post.

Phillips then spurned a golden opportunity to add a third just after the match restarted. Wallace picked out the winger a few yards from goal but he made a mistake in his slide effort and deflected the ball for an Ipswich throw.
