Werribee top the VFL after an incredible six-point win over Southport to end their 31-year wait for the competition’s top prize.

The Tigers had to survive a late push from the Sharks, which saw them reduce a 26-point deficit with 11 minutes to go, but still secured a famous victory, trailing by 19 points at half-time.

Werribee finished as winners with 10.9 (69) to 8.15 (63), leading to emotional scenes at IKON Park.

It is the first time since 1991 that the Tigers have won the flag.

Werribee captain Dom Brew, who was named the competition’s best player earlier this week, couldn’t hold back the tears after the final whistle.

“That’s the work of a lifetime, isn’t it? These guys… we’re winning minor premiers, but we shouldn’t be here. There’s a lot of guys under 22, and I’m so proud of them,” he told Channel Seven.

‘He (our coach) gave us an absolute beating (at half-time). One of the best I’ve ever had. Pretty direct. We needed that, we were messing around, we weren’t playing the way we should have.

“Never (worried). Never write us off, mate. There are people who get knocked down and don’t get back up, but us Werribee lads, we get back up every time and keep going.”

Jack Henderson was awarded the Norm Goss Medal after recording 23 possessions and scoring two goals.

He was presented with the medal by former Werribee star and current Geelong player Shaun Mannagh, who won the award last year with 28 possessions and six goals in the losing team.
