Wentworthville, Sydney: Four people rushed to hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after lighting charcoal briquette barbecue
Three adults and a child have been taken to hospital after becoming infected with toxic fumes from a barbecue lit in a house.
Firefighters and other emergency services responded to a call from a home on Wentworth Street in Wentworthville at 3am on Saturday and quickly discovered a carbon monoxide leak.
The four people indicated that they felt unwell due to the fumes from the barbecue.
NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Tim Hassiotis told 7News crews that specialist firefighters had detected high levels of carbon monoxide in the house using special monitoring equipment.
It is suspected that the gas came from the use of a charcoal barbecue in the home.
“This type of equipment, used as a heater, poses a very dangerous threat,” Supt Hassiotis said, warning people of the risks of using such equipment to generate heat.
“We urge users of this type of equipment to only do so in a well-ventilated area.”
The four affected individuals remain in a stable condition at Westmead Hospital and Westmead Children’s Hospital.
