Wendy’s is officially coming Down Under with the American fast food chain announcing 200 burger restaurants to open across Australia in the next decade.

The burger chain has signed a franchise agreement with Flynn Restaurant Group, opening the first Wendy’s stores in 2025.

Wendy’s President and International and Chief Development Officer, Abigail Pringle, said demand for Australia’s restaurants was clear following the success of a 2021 Wendy’s one-day pop-up event in Sydney.

“Australia is a strategic market for long-term growth for Wendy’s. Flynn Restaurant Group has incredible experience in the restaurant space and we are excited to expand our relationship with them,” she said.

“They have a strong leadership team, great culture, extensive industry knowledge, success with our brand in the US, and we believe Flynn Restaurant Group is the right partner to drive growth for Wendy’s in Australia.”

Wendy’s, the third largest burger chain in the world after McDonald’s and Burger King, plans to open 200 stores to Australian customers by 2034.

The chain, which has more than 7,000 locations worldwide, is best known for its square burgers, French fries and “Frosty” frozen dairy desserts.

It differs from McDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s by having a strict made-to-order policy and not keeping food warm using heat lamps.

Flynn’s Restaurant Group owns other popular American fast food chains such as Applebee’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Arby’s and Pizza Hut.

Founder Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in Ohio on November 15, 1969 – and it’s been a global success ever since.

The menu also offers chicken sandwiches, nuggets, vegetarian options, breakfast sandwiches, salads, along with an interesting array of side dishes – including chilli con carne and stuffed potatoes.

Wendy’s has recently expanded into the UK and Ireland and can be found in Europe, Asia and the United States.
