Wendy’s to open first Australian location tomorrow

Wendy’s is officially coming Down Under and the American fast food chain will open its first store in Australia on Wednesday

It will be located on Cavill Avenue in Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast.

Wendy’s, the world’s third largest hamburger chain after McDonald’s and Burger King, has planned to have 200 stores open to Australian customers by 2034.

The chain, which has more than 7,000 locations worldwide, is best known for its square burgers, fries and ‘Frosty’ frozen dairy desserts.

It differentiates itself from McDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s by having a strict made-to-order policy and not keeping food warm using heat lamps.

Flynn’s Restaurant Group will operate the Wendy’s franchise in Australia.

It owns other popular American fast food chains such as Applebee’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Arby’s and Pizza Hut.

The group is the world’s largest restaurant franchisee and acquired the Australian Pizza Hut franchises in 2023.

Founder Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in Ohio on November 15, 1969 – and it has since become a worldwide success.

The menu also offers chicken sandwiches, nuggets, vegetarian options, breakfast sandwiches, salads and an interesting range of side dishes including chilli con carne and stuffed potatoes.

Wendy’s recently expanded into Great Britain and Ireland and can be found throughout Europe, Asia, New Zealand and throughout the United States.

This isn’t the first time Wendy’s has launched in Australia, with a store opening in Melbourne in 1982.

A total of eleven stores were opened, but three years later the company collapsed with $8 million in debt.
