Wendy’s burgers are coming to Australia: Check out the delicious menu that will be available at 200 locations – and why the beef patties are square and not round
Australian foodies will be treated to a delicious bacon and spice menu when US burger joint Wendy’s launches in 200 locations across the country.
The chain, which has more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide, is best known for its French fries and “Frosty” frozen dairy desserts and Baconator burger — as well as its famous beef square patties.
The patties are square to emphasize that “Wendy’s doesn’t cut corners” in the kitchen.
The first Wendy’s opened in Ohio in 1969 after founder Dave Thomas decided he wanted to make a “better burger.”
“That idea of ’don’t cut corners’ isn’t far from the actual truth,” said Frank Vamos, Wendy’s director of brand communications. Sensation.
It is believed that the reason Wendy’s patties are square and not round is “because Wendy’s doesn’t cut corners” in the kitchen (pictured is the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger)
‘Another important reason is that Dave always had great confidence in the quality of our meat. He wanted to make sure the patty sticks out of the bun for everyone to see, to see the juiciness. And that’s what the square burger does.’
It is also practical that the patties are square, as more can fit on a grill.
The menu also offers chicken sandwiches, nuggets, vegetarian options, breakfast sandwiches, salads and an interesting array of side dishes, including chilli con carne and stuffed potatoes.

Another little-known fact about the franchise is the hidden message that many believe is in the Wendy’s logo.
The design shows a red-haired girl with her hair in two side braids and wearing a white shirt with a blue trim. The girl’s collar appears to spell out the word “mother,” a possible hint at the brand’s humble beginnings and the thought of a mother’s home-cooked meals.
However, Wendy’s has previously denied any claims of subliminal messages in their branding.
Another little-known fact about the franchise is the hidden message that many believe is in the Wendy’s logo – the word “mom.”
According to The Sun, a spokesperson for Wendy’s said: ‘We are aware of this and find it interesting that it looks like our Wendy cameo has ‘mom’ on her ruffled collar. We can assure you it was unintentional.’
On Thursday, Wendy’s announced it is officially going Down Under with 200 restaurants to open over the next ten years.
The chain has signed a franchise agreement with Flynn Restaurant Group, with the first stores opening in 2025.
Wendy’s International President and Chief Development Officer, Abigail Pringle, said demand for Australia’s restaurants was clear following the success of a 2021 Wendy’s one-day pop-up event in Sydney.
It follows as Wendy’s has announced it’s officially coming Down Under with the US fast food chain announcing 200 burger restaurants to open across Australia in the next decade
Wendy’s, the third largest burger chain in the world after McDonald’s and Burger King, plans to open 200 stores to Australian customers by 2034
“Australia is a strategic market for long-term growth for Wendy’s. Flynn Restaurant Group has incredible experience in the restaurant space and we are excited to expand our relationship with them,” she said.
“They have a strong leadership team, great culture, extensive industry knowledge, success with our brand in the US, and we believe Flynn Restaurant Group is the right partner to drive growth for Wendy’s in Australia.”
The expansion is said to require around 10,000 employees.
It differs from McDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s by having a strict made-to-order policy and not keeping food warm using heat lamps.
Flynn’s Restaurant Group owns other popular American fast food chains such as Applebee’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Arby’s and Pizza Hut.
The group is the world’s largest restaurant franchise operator and took over Australia’s Pizza Hut franchises in June this year.
The chain, which has more than 7,000 locations worldwide, is best known for its square burgers, fries and ‘Frosty’ frozen dairy desserts
Wendy’s has recently expanded into the UK and Ireland and can be found in Europe, Asia and the United States.
It is not the first time Wendy’s has launched in Australia with a store opening in Melbourne in 1982.
A total of eleven stores were opened, but three years later the company collapsed with $8 million in debt.
Questions have also been raised about Wendy’s partnering in Australia with local company Wendy’s Milk Bar.
“There can’t be two Wendys,” says Dean Tully, owner of the Aussie Wendy’s shop in Whyalla, South Australia, which specializes in ice cream.
Ms Pringle said there are no legal concerns about the functioning of either company and that they ‘both can exist in the marketplace’.
