A Tasmanian mother was left baffled after finding a dead seahorse stuck between the slats on the back terrace of her suburban home.

Lauren McArthur shared the mystery photos on a local community Facebook group, with the Old Beach local wondering if someone else had found “a seahorse on her deck” or if it was “just her.”

‘What the real fuck?’ she wrote: “I wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something.”

Mrs. McArthur was bringing in the laundry when she first noticed the creature wedged between the wooden slats on the deck.

The mystery find (pictured seahorse) is believed to have been tossed into the backyard by a bird after fishing for it in the nearby River Derwent.

‘I have two dogs and they were sniffing, and I was thinking what the hell is that?’ she told Yahoo News Australia.

Ms McArthur said she moved the creature gently with her shoe to get a better look at it, before realizing it was a seahorse.

“This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this outside of an aquarium.”

The Tasmanian mother lives south of Hobart, 50 meters from the Derwent River, but she was still puzzled as to how the seahorse ended up in her backyard.

Other residents believe they have solved the mystery, by replying to his post, most likely it was a ‘seagull that dropped its breakfast’ after fishing it out of the nearby water.

Another local shared his own story and a photo of a bat he had found clinging to his slippers, while another quipped: “If she was lying on the terrace sunbathing, that might have ended differently.”

Some took the mystery in a different direction, writing ‘they are aliens… Something similar happened to me at home’.

Ms. McArthur said she does not believe in seahorse was the work of aliens or some other supernatural being.

‘I’m not a big drinker. I don’t smoke anything, and it didn’t fall out of the sky by magic.

She assumes the creature was likely dropped by a bird, after seeing an increase in numbers at the preserve near her home in recent weeks.

BirdLife Tasmania’s Dr Eric Woehler said the most likely candidate to have dropped the seahorse was a herring gull, but Pacific and marine gulls were also possibilities.

“Any of these could pick one up from time to time… the other alternative is a forest crow scavenging on the beach,” he said.
