Weekend heatwave to strike Australia: What you need to know
Australia has been warned of a heatwave set to hit parts of the country this weekend, with a major weather system producing above-average temperatures.
A high-pressure system forming in the southern part of the country will unleash a hot air mass over northern Australia in the coming days.
A cold front then moves through South Australia, dragging the hot air towards the east coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of strong gusts expected to hit parts of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland until late Wednesday.
Parts of southern Australia are likely to experience dry conditions before the cold front establishes itself.
Weather Zone meteorologist Corine Brown told Daily Mail Australia the combination of hot and cold weather is causing the latest heatwave.
“The pressure difference between the high and the cold front… is what will pull the heat from inland into Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney,” Ms Brown said.
“The high-pressure system will remain persistent for a number of days, allowing heat to build up.”

Ms Brown said temperatures in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney will peak this weekend.
“For Sydney… there is a chance that there will be a sea breeze that will keep temperatures below 30 degrees,” she said.
‘The far west of Sydney is pretty much a good chance to see something [temperatures] around 35 degrees’.
