A disgruntled wedding guest has revealed her surprise after being asked to pay £100 to contribute towards food and drink at a friend’s wedding.

Post to mumsnetthe British mother said she had been surprised when the wedding invitation arrived with the request for money and said, ‘Is this the new thing?’

She took offense at the high cost, which led her and her husband to pay £200 for some buffet meals, drinks and a cash contribution towards the honeymoon.

Her post caused a stir on the site, with some suggesting she had a right to say no to the invitation – while others said it was “fair enough” amid the cost of living crisis.

The couple declined the invitation, but were then asked to buy their own pizza at a friend’s birthday party, which left them wondering if this money-saving tactic was becoming a trend.

The anonymous poster read: “Last week we got a wedding invitation for the end of January.

“The invitation says we have to pay for our food. £100 each. It’s worded like they’re doing us a favour, as it’s only £200. Plus asking us for money for their honeymoon.

“Then this morning in the mail there’s an invitation to an important birthday for one of DH’s (cute husband) friends and it says there won’t be a buffet, but there will be a van outside where we can BUY a pizza.

This wedding guest decided not to attend a friend’s wedding after being asked to fund their own food and money for the honeymoon. She then asked if this was a “new thing” after a birthday invitation that says guests can buy their own pizza.

‘We buy our own drinks at both events.’

The poster received massive approval, with people agreeing the request was “strange” and those who agreed saying £100 was “too much” to pay for a wedding buffet.

Others said, “If you can’t afford to feed your guests, don’t get married.”

Regarding the birthday party, the Mumsnet users were more forgiving and said they could “understand” that a bit more.

Mumsnet users were as shocked as the original poster, calling the bride and groom “just” but saying they wouldn’t have much of a problem paying for pizza at a party

One user said, ‘Wow. I’ve never heard of this. But I think these are difficult times. If I couldn’t afford to feed my wedding guests.

“I think I’d only have a small wedding or save a little longer. Super cheeky to ask you to contribute!’

Another agreed: ‘I’ve never received an invitation like this, certainly normal to buy your own drinks at the bar.

‘The last wedding we went to, we had a glass of prosecco or juice on the terrace before the reception, a glass of wine and a glass of champagne with the meal.

“I wouldn’t pay £200 on top of all the other costs of attending a wedding.”

One poster said it was fair enough, and paying for pizza was a 'nice idea' for a birthday event, but they did point out that £40 was a more realistic price cap

One person said it was “fair enough” and noted that it is “ridiculous” that the bride and groom have to pay for everything for their special day, adding: “I have no problem with people paying for their own food.” at weddings. I think it’s fair enough and could be an appointment rather than a gift.

‘But I wouldn’t expect this to be more than £40 and the cost of the wedding cake shouldn’t be included.

‘Buying your own pizza is a great idea. I’d rather do this and go to three times as many birthday parties and weddings.

“It’s just ridiculous that the bride and groom are expected to pay for everything. We now live in a time when financial support from the family is often not available.’

Some wondered if the buffet would be ‘great’ at that price, saying ‘Is it a great banquet for £100 each?

‘Not okay at all. I can understand the party because so much food is thrown away and that way you can eat before you leave. But it’s still a bit strange.’
