Not all white? Sister-in-law accused of outshining the bride with her spectacular dress, but some argue it’s “completely appropriate”

As tricky as choosing an outfit for a friend’s wedding can be, there’s one golden rule of style that most guests should obey: Avoid anything remotely bridal at all costs.

So with this in mind, it’s no surprise that a long lace dress an American woman recently wore to her brother’s wedding has sparked a debate online.

Earlier this month, the anonymous woman posted a photo of the lace dress she had bought for her sister’s recent nuptials in hopes of selling it for $1,500. [£1,230].

The dress, which hung in a wooden display case, has a plunging V-neckline and a bodice covered in flower appliqués.

In addition to this, the voluminous skirt of the A-line dress was made up of several layers of lace.

After seeing it on social media, a resident who lived nearby posted a screenshot of the dress on Reddit’s Wedding Shaming forum.

Inviting others to comment on the dress, the woman wrote: “Saw this on Marketplace, looks soooo like a wedding dress…”

The post has amassed more than 160 comments since it was shared over the weekend, but despite the Reddit user’s blatant disapproval, other forum members sided with the groom’s sister on the matter.

The dress sparked debate among Reddit members, with some arguing that it was “completely appropriate” wedding guest attire.

Acknowledging that it looked bridal, one replied: ‘We don’t know anything about the wedding. It could have been completely appropriate.

Another added: ‘It looks vaguely purple to me. Depending on the theme of the wedding it could have been perfectly appropriate. I have been in one.

Jumping to the woman’s defense, a third said: “It looks like it belongs to someone in the bridal party, though not exactly the bride’s dress.”

‘That’s not white! Mauve, pink and purple”, argued a fourth. ‘Floral appliqués and layered skirt.’

“Everything else aside, I didn’t even spend that much money on my wedding dress,” said a fifth. ‘I would never spend $1500 on a dress for my sister’s wedding!’
