Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Aussies brace for wet and wild weekend as rain in the ‘triple digits’ smashes the east coast

Strong winds, heavy rain and freezing temperatures will hit Australia’s south-east this weekend, with some areas experiencing up to 100mm of water.

A low-pressure weather system 250km off the Gold Coast continues to push 100km/h winds along coastal areas.

Towering waves of up to nine meters are forecast along the New South Wales coast, with higher ground hit hardest by the gale-force winds.

“We’ve definitely had the wind whistling along the northern NSW coast,” Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) meteorologist Angus Hines said. news.com.au.

‘The heaviest rain falls along the northeastern coastline.

‘Places here could see between 70 and 100 millimeters of rain over the next few days, and it’s likely that a few of the rain gauges along this stretch will see more than 100 millimeters cracking those triple digits.’

Northern areas of NSW, the NSW/VIC border and southern regions of Queensland have been hit hard by the wet and wild weather.

Forecasters from Weatherwatch told Daily Mail Australia that the high altitude of coastal areas would prevent waves and heavy rain from causing major damage.

Experts predict Saturday should be the last day of severe weather conditions as the low-pressure system begins to move away from the Australian coastline.

But it could still draw moisture from the coast, causing heavier falls on the Mid-North Coast and northern rivers, with the risk of flash flooding and river flooding.

Areas closest to the low should experience drier conditions on Sunday, although sunny days are not expected to return until next week.

Rain can still be expected in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide this weekend as low temperatures dissipate and drift away from the coast.

Severe weather warnings are still in force for Queensland’s south-east coast, the Darling Downs and the NSW coast from Coffs Harbor northwards, where winds of 100km/h are expected to wreak havoc.
