Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weekend weather: What you need to know

Australia is experiencing a spell of warm weather and it is expected to remain pleasant into the weekend.

There is currently a slowly moving area of high pressure in the centre of the country, causing temperatures to rise.

Weatherzone meteorologist Michael Phillips said temperatures would be “certainly significantly above normal” over the coming days, describing the rising temperatures as a “winter heatwave”.

“When you look at how warm it’s going to be, particularly in the Northern Territory and the northern parts of South Australia, it’s significantly warmer than normal,” he said.

‘In some regions, such as the Northern Territory and northern parts of South Australia, it could continue into Sunday.

“It’s still a heat wave, but not as bad as a summer heat wave.”

For Australians on the east coast, it will be a pleasant temperature on Saturday. A maximum temperature of 25 degrees is expected in Sydney, 22 degrees in Melbourne, 27 degrees in Brisbane, 21 degrees in Canberra and 19 degrees in Hobart.

But places closer to central New South Wales will be even warmer, with Darwin expected to hit 35 degrees Celsius and Coober Pedy in northern South Australia forecast to hit 34 degrees Celsius.

The only place where a heatwave is not expected is the south of Western Australia. Perth is expected to see cooler weather and some showers this week, with temperatures reaching 21 degrees Celsius.

There is a chance that temperatures will rise again in the middle of next week, before a stronger cold front causes temperatures to drop again.

‘Early next week it will cool down a bit, by the middle of next week it will warm up again and the biggest cold front, where it will really cool down – at least for a few days – will come towards the end of the month.’
