We traveled 1,000 miles to see our favorite NFL player… then the unthinkable happened
Social media users found themselves at a standoff after a family of Eagles fans traveled far and wide for their season finale against the New York Giants.
Hours before Sunday’s highly anticipated game, NFLonFox’s X account posted a photo of a family holding up a sign and expressing their excitement to watch Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record.
“I traveled 1,000 miles to see Saquon break the record,” the sign read.
The account parlayed the photo with a SpongeBob SquarePants meme, which read, “How do we tell him?”
Barkley spent his first six seasons with the Giants, where he rushed for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns.
However, he infamously joined their rival Eagles in the offseason and had a career-defining season in the City of Brotherly Love.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, Barkley has rushed for 2,005 yards. In addition to his yards, Barkley rushed for 13 touchdowns and received two this season.
While they were still 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s record, the Eagles decided to rest Barkley and put any hopes of breaking the record to bed. Although news of Barkley skipping the game was reported earlier this week, the family seemingly missed the headlines when planning their trip to East Rutherford.
“Oh no, they haven’t seen any football news this week or anything?” one user commented on the post.
“Damn and they still have to travel back 1000 miles,” a second responded.
A third user suggested the family should have ‘respectfully downloaded a sports app’.
Other users pointed out that the sign could have been a sarcastic joke rather than a product of misinformation.
Nevertheless, the Eagles secured the 20-13 victory and finished their season with a 14-3 record. Quarterback Tanner McKee led the way for Philadelphia with 27 completions for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles have secured the second seed in the NFC playoffs and will host the Green Bay Packers in a wild-card matchup.
